چکیده

Off‐road vehicle (ORV) use is an increasingly popular form of outdoor recreation throughout the United States. This form of motorized recreation, however, can sometimes lead to serious erosion of trail running surfaces, with resulting export of sediment into forested ecosystems causing environmental degradation. This project was conducted to determine the feasibility of using two types of soil amendments, an acrylic copolymer (Envirotac) and a lignin emulsion (Terrabind), as cementing agents to seal and harden ORV trails to reduce erosion and promote durability. The amendments were evaluated in controlled traffic tests on simulated trails in two slope classes – averaging 2% and 8%, respectively. Simulated rainfall events of 1‐h duration and intensity of 75 mm/h were used to assess erosion potential. Results showed that both amendments increased total runoff from test plots on flatter slopes, but that sediment concentration was reduced. Net export of sediment was lower for treated plots than those not receiving any soil amendment. In further tests after a period of four months and at higher soil moisture content, the Envirotac treatment retained most of its ability to control the sediment concentration of effluent while the effectiveness of the lignin product was reduced. The Envirotac product was selected for limited testing on actual ORV trails. The amendment was applied on curved, outsloped sections of trails and rut formation was compared to untreated curves located nearby. The soil amendment did not improve durability of the treated sections, but this was likely due to high soil moisture content at the time of installation.

Analyzing the Impacts of Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Trails on Watershed Processes in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Trails created by off-road vehicles (ORV) in boreal lowlands are known to cause local impacts, such as denuded vegetation, soil erosion, and permafrost thaw, but impacts on stream and watershed processes are less certain. In Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST), Alaska, ORV trails have caused local resource damage in intermountain lowlands with permafrost soils and abundant wetl...

Dust dynamics in off-road vehicle trails: Measurements on 16 arid soil types, Nevada, USA.

Soil analyses and measurements with the Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) were conducted on 16 soil types in an area heavily affected by off-road vehicle (ORV) driving. Measurements were performed in ORV trails as well as on undisturbed terrain to investigate how ORV driving affects the vulnerability of a soil to emit PM10 (particles<10microm), during the driving as well as du...

Recreational stream crossing effects on sediment delivery and macroinvertebrates in southwestern Virginia, USA.

Trail-based recreation has increased over recent decades, raising the environmental management issue of soil erosion that originates from unsurfaced, recreational trail systems. Trail-based soil erosion that occurs near stream crossings represents a non-point source of pollution to streams. We modeled soil erosion rates along multiple-use (hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding) recreati...

Free and forced vibration analysis on finite element model of an off-road vehicle

In the present paper, the modal analysis on a full finite element model of an off-road vehicle. This vehicle was modeled in the CATIA software and then meshed in the HYPERMESH software. The free vibration analysis was conducted by the ABAQUS software. By applying an external displacement, the forced vibration analysis was also performed. As a result, natural frequencies and shape modes were ext...

Autonomous Trail Following

Following off-road trails is somewhat more complex than following man-made roads. Trails are unstructured and typically lack standard markers that characterize roadways. Nevertheless, trails can provide an effective set of pathways for off-road navigation. Here we approach the problem of trail following by identifying traillike regions; that is regions that are locally planar, contiguous with t...
